Polygonum multiflorum, also called as Fallopia multiflora, is perennial herb with glabrous twining stems and blade ovate leaves. Roots are black-brown tuber and their shape is narrowly elliptic and large. Also known under the name Chinese knotweed, the root of Polygonum multiflorum is used in traditional Chinese medicine as He Shou Wu or Fo Ti. The root is collected in automn and winter, then washed, cut in large slices and dried. It can also be used crude or prepared with black soya sauce and then dried under the sun.

Polygonum multiflorum extract promoted hair growth by inducing anagen phase in telogenic C57BL6/N mice. In Polygonum multiflorum extract treated group, we observed increase in the number and the size of hair follicles that are considered as evidence for anagen phase induction. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that earlier induction of β-catenin and Shh were observed in Polygonum multiflorum extract treated group compared to that in control group.
