Yogyakarta, Indonesia (Prambanan and Borobudur)

Welcome to the inaugural article of my travel blog. I'm thrilled to share my recent journey and document future adventures here.

In the delightful month of May 2023, I contemplated my travel destinations for the year, considering Siem Reap in Cambodia and Yogyakarta in Indonesia. Ultimately, I chose Yogyakarta due to the remarkable hospitality I experienced during my previous visits to Indonesia. The genuine smiles and warm welcomes from the locals contribute to Yogyakarta's captivating charm, making it an unforgettable destination.

Fondly referred to as Yogya or Jogja, Yogyakarta enthralls visitors with its harmonious blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. Situated in the heart of Java, Indonesia, this city exudes a magical atmosphere where the past seamlessly intertwines with the present.

Yogyakarta boasts some of the world's most renowned temples, including the iconic Prambanan and Borobudur. These ancient marvels showcase intricate carvings and awe-inspiring structures, transporting visitors back in time and offering a glimpse into the spiritual and grandiose past.

Nature enthusiasts will find themselves immersed in Yogyakarta's enchanting surroundings, where the quaint charm of the region coexists harmoniously with its vibrant present, creating an unforgettable and captivating journey.

Day 1: Arrival at the Airport and Stay at Joglo Ayem Tentrem
Upon arrival, I made my way to Joglo Ayem Tentrem, a charming Javanese-style villa that became my home during this adventure. This traditional villa, with its serene atmosphere, beautiful garden, and comfortable amenities, provided the perfect sanctuary for relaxation. The generous local breakfast further enhanced my stay.

Prambanan Temple and Ramayana
After settling into my villa at Joglo Ayem Tentrem, I embarked on a visit to the stunning Prambanan Temple. Despite the rain, the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia left me speechless with its intricate carvings and towering spires. This 9th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site pays tribute to the Trimurti, the divine expression of God as the Creator (Brahma), the Preserver (Vishnu), and the Destroyer (Shiva).

In the evening, despite the drizzle, I witnessed a mesmerizing performance of the Ramayana Ballet, set against the backdrop of Prambanan Temple. This traditional Javanese dance-drama, accompanied by captivating gamelan music, provided a perfect conclusion to my first day.

Day 2: Rumah Boedi Borobudur and Borobudur
After bidding farewell to Joglo Ayem Tentrem, I indulged in a delightful lunch at a floating restaurant. Following that, I made my way to Rumah Boedi Borobudur, a picturesque boutique hotel nestled amidst lush gardens. The tranquil ambiance of this serene setting offered the perfect retreat. I checked in and met the humble host, who arranged transportation for my visit to Borobudur and other destinations the following day. A traditional massage awaited me upon my return from Borobudur Temple.

Borobudur Temple
The grandeur of Borobudur Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in the world, left me in awe. This 9th-century marvel, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, comprises nine stacked platforms adorned with intricate carvings depicting the life of Buddha. The panoramic views from the top were truly unforgettable.

Day 3: Obelix Hills, Gereja Ayam, and Mary's Sendangsono Shrine
My day began with a visit to the breathtaking Obelix Hills, where the stunning vistas and refreshing mountain air rejuvenated my spirit. Next on the itinerary was the unique Gereja Ayam, fondly known as the "Chicken Church." This abandoned structure, resembling a giant chicken, offered panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. I then ventured to Mary's Sendangsono Shrine, a sacred Catholic pilgrimage site nestled in the hills of Magelang. The serene ambiance and picturesque surroundings made it a truly special place.

As my stay at Borobudur drew to a close, I savored a delectable meal at the Mushroom restaurant in Magelang, where dishes featuring mushrooms as the main ingredient delighted my taste buds. Finally, I retreated to Joglo Plawang Boutique Resort for my last night in Yogyakarta, a perfect conclusion to this unforgettable journey.

Day 4: Departure
After checking out and enjoying a leisurely lunch, I made my way to the airport for my return to Kuala Lumpur. At the airport, I was captivated by a remarkable Javanese cultural dance performance outside the departure hall.

Overall, my trip to Prambanan and Borobudur was a remarkable experience filled with awe-inspiring moments, delectable cuisine, and a deeper appreciation for Indonesia's rich history and culture.
